RPM Range? was created by Guido8587
Ok here's the deal. I have a 1980 LTD 650E that runs great. However the rpm seems to be to high. When im going 70mph on the high way my rpms sit around 6000. Is this correct or do i have a problem?

Assuming you have the stock sprockets and rear wheel at 6000 rpm you should be traveling 80 mph. At 70 mph you should be turning about 5250 rpm. Something is not right; probably the clutch is slipping. I would start by adjusting the clutch according to the instructions in the Kawasaki Service Manual. Ed

Those dont look like no 70mph forks to me

Check for correct stock sprockets (like Ed said), and yes, those old 650's whined on the freeway.

Hello, Guido8587, and WELCOME to KZr! :cheer:

Caution: Wild Speculation Ahead.

Perhaps the PO added touring accessories (fairing and bags), and then desiring a slower more relaxed rpm at cruising speed, changed the counter-shaft sprocket, but goofed up and fitted one tooth smaller rather than one tooth larger.

Oh ... Wait a sec! That's a roof support post -- not a sissy bar!

Good Fortune! :)

Count the teeth on your sprockets to see if your rpm makes sense for your mph or not before you go chasing clutch issues. B)

It's usually easy to notice when the clutch is slipping, because the rpm rises without a commiserate increase in road speed.

I'm pretty sure you just gave someone an idea for a sissy bar :woohoo:

Someone got the idea a long time ago.

I think 6000 rpm on my old bike would get you 80 mph. I am not sure as I have not had my coffee. Roy

My bike used to do around that. But I assumed it was a tach problem. That used to bounce around a lot. As the tach gets older and crappier, the spring will get softer so it'll read higher.

If you own or know someone who owns a decent dwell meter you can check the accuracy of the tach using it. Ed
