Options for connecting oil cooler to engine?

I'm thinking I want one for my 78 KZ1000. There's a ton of used coolers on fleabay, but usually without any connecting hardware.

What are the various connecting points available and what do I need to use them?

I'm thinking of trying to put it under the engine so it's not very visible.

A shunt cooler has a "tap" at the high pressure outlet where the oil pressure sending unit goes which bleeds off a little oil and sends it to the cooler, then it returns at the drain plug in the oil pan.

A series cooler sends all the oil through the cooler.

so If I buy a cooler with no hoses or connectors, what will I need to hook it up? Running all the oil thru sounds best to me.

Not sure. A shunt cooler will also cool the oil pretty well. I actually tried to put one on my 750 twin about 25 years ago, but you need the fitting that goes into the oil pressure outlet (with a restrictor orifice to bleed oil into the cooler) and has a place to screw the pressure sending unit in. And you need a fitting that screws into where the oil drain plug goes for the oil to return. I called the company that made them for the 750-4 bikes but they did not have them for a twin.

I think motor oil is so much better now, the stock bikes don't nee coolers anymore. Even in severe service like desert heat or heavy city driving, just run true synthetic and you'll have no worries.

Sounds best to me too. There is only 3-5 #'s oil pressure in these motors and the cams run in plain bearings which live on oil pressure. Shunting some oil to cool it and then send to the sump seems kind of nuts. Go to this site www.oldkawman.com/ There is a link on the left to a page concerning oil coolers. Also an offer to sell you one complete. A previous owner put a Kerker cooler on my stock '78 KZ1000 and I don't think it is needed. After a long run to heat up the oil for changing and a short cool down so I don't get burnt, the oil comes out warm but not hot. My system also has a thermostat in it, desirable in cold weather or the engine will take forever to heat up.

Why dick around with a used cooler, your bike is just too fine to worry about an old cooler not doing it's job.... ;)

And how much old metal is in that used cooler, ready to start grinding away on your pistons and bearings? Buy new. JMHO & OMR's.

Anytime your have braided SS lines for oil, or brake systems, get some of the spiral wrap sold at Radio Shack or other electrical suppliers. Even cushioned aircraft syle clamps will control movement:

The braided lines will act like a slow speed file, wearing through paint, brake lines, and electrical wiring.
