Am thinking clutch will stay engaged with side cover off, because then there's nothing to press against the push rod which disengages the clutch.
Good Fortune!

I have had them to break loose while transporting them on a trailer. I guess the back and forth motion broke them loose. Roy

Ed, what direction do you have to turn the clutch release adjusting screw on your 650?
I'd guess his would be done the same as yours?
On my 81 CSR, I have to turn it counterclockwise first, then clockwise 1/4 turn.
On '77 KZ650-C1 you loosen the locknut then loosen the adjuster screw (counter-clockwise); then you turn the adjuster screw in (clockwise) until it starts to become hard to turn (this is when it begins to disengage the clutch); the you loosen it (counter-clockwise) 1/2 turn and then tighten the locknut.
I agree his is probably the same because even though his bike is a newer model the engine has been replaced with one from a 1977 bike. Ed

Could be....my Barrnett clutch sticks together and needs to be rocked in gear to break loose after sitting a few days.
