650 clutch was created by NORT
Just got this 650, went through the carbs and points, got it running great. the clutch won't disengage, have adjusted the cable, just seems like the rod is bottomed out even with the side cover off. what should I be looking for?

Am thinking clutch will stay engaged with side cover off, because then there's nothing to press against the push rod which disengages the clutch.

Good Fortune! :)

Welcome aboard. Did the person that sold you the bike tell you the engine had been replaced? Ed

Some time the clutch plates stick together if the bikes sits very long. You can try rocking the bike back and forth, remove the clutch plates, orcrank the bike and get it rolling and put it in gear and ride it.

I have had them to break loose while transporting them on a trailer. I guess the back and forth motion broke them loose. Roy

Ed, what direction do you have to turn the clutch release adjusting screw on your 650?
I'd guess his would be done the same as yours?

On my 81 CSR, I have to turn it counterclockwise first, then clockwise 1/4 turn.

On '77 KZ650-C1 you loosen the locknut then loosen the adjuster screw (counter-clockwise); then you turn the adjuster screw in (clockwise) until it starts to become hard to turn (this is when it begins to disengage the clutch); the you loosen it (counter-clockwise) 1/2 turn and then tighten the locknut.

I agree his is probably the same because even though his bike is a newer model the engine has been replaced with one from a 1977 bike. Ed

Could be....my Barrnett clutch sticks together and needs to be rocked in gear to break loose after sitting a few days.

well, I pulled the clutch cover off last night and the clutches were stuck together. the ball was welded to the plunger. Yes I knew the engine had been replaced, I also have two spare engines. will have some parts today and should have it back together tonight.

It is always good news when you find the problem. Having spare parts is a big plus. Roy

Got everything back together last night, everything adjusted and all works great. Rode it to work today even though it is raining, it will now be tough to get me off of it
