Help! Engine cut out on highway, soft seize? was created by vandenbusschebr
Apologies if this is posted somewhere else, but all I keep finding are posts about brake calipers seizing...

Was coming off the freeway today and the engine cut out. Happened as I pulled in the clutch to downshift. Pulled over and couldn't restart. pulled the plugs and couldn't even kick start. the pistons would barely move (w.o the plugs in) BUT then after walking to the gas station and back i dropped some oil in the cylendars and was able to lube them up enough to get them to move freely again. put the plugs in and was able to kick start it. Rode home at low speeds and it didn't happen again.

Bike was not low on oil and not leaking anywhere.

Anyone have an idea of what this sounds like? what may have caused it? what can i do to prevent it?

thanks,

Brett

When is the last time you changed the oil? What oil did you use? Are you running pods without rejetting the carbs? What model motorcycle is it?

I never had that happen with a 4 stroke but I over heated a 2 stroke as a kid and when the engine cooled off the, the parts "shrunk" and I got it started but would'nt stay running. We rebuilt the top end and fixed it. But it was totally siezed up at one point before it cooled off.

What type oil did you use in it?

Including information about bike year and model is helpful to viewers and usually elicits better responses.
It's easy to put the information in your signature where it shows in all posted messages, past and future. And may be changed whenever and as often as desired.

have it serviced? where is the fun in that?

Anyway to those that enjoy wrenching...

exhaust pipe is a bit pitted.

it was low on oil, about half quart.
Talked to a shop, they said if oil pump goes then compression will be down... anyone know if this is true?

checked compression today 155 in the left and 160 in the right (warmed up engine)

Bike seems to start and run fine (when I drive it a few miles)

I'm just nervous to take it out again and end up stranded!
