Engine Knock - kz1000 was created by novicerider
Hello All, New to the site but have been reading for several months now and learned quite a bit of info, and was inspired to get my old bike out of storage and get her running again.

Heres the quick scoop:
1994 kzp1000 - 19xxx miles - been in storage since 2004

Pulled out of storage, brought home, pulled carbs off and cleaned very well and re-installed, changed oil, new gas, etc...

Fired right up, but there is a very loud knocking noise coming from lower end only at idle...(does not idle real well, probably going to rebuild carbs and re-sync carbs)

I dont know if I want to invest time in re-building carbs if i have more serious problems with knocking noise... It is definitely loud, and lower, but goes away when I rev the engine, and i am not sure if that is because the RPM is higher and the bike is louder and maybe i just cant hear it..

At a rought idle, while running, there is a dry rubbing / kncking noise coming from right side of motor, that seem to go away under acceleration...

any suggestions, tips? Someone told me it could be as simple as rebuilding and syncing the carbs? ? i dont know how that would be the case...

please help - its getting warm here in st. louis and I wanna ride!

Hi

I would pull the plug wire from 1 cylinder at a time and run it. I know in a car motor a bad rod/etc is quite a bit noisier with no spark. Maybe the same for you. Might help id which cylinder is a problem.

Sounds to me like a classic case of carbs that need to be synced. Considering that the bike has been stored for 8 years, you probably should clean out the carbs first, then sync.

Help me understand....

Carbs not being in sync will cause or "could cause" and lower end knock?

thanks and pardon my ignorance...

Aye mike,
I’m having a  knock that appears to completely disappear at around 1,300+, did you come to any resolve? Or do I have to pull this heavy b***h out and split it again

Depends on what is causing the sound. Start with the easy stuff. Make sure the valves are properly adjusted and the make sure the carburetors are properly synchronized.

Does the noise change if you pull the clutch lever in ?

No thanks for the reply! My noise seems to be more toward starter clutch/piston 1. Clutch is good. Oil light will come on at idle as well ever since I replaced trans, haven’t put many miles on it, I tried to ignore it since it went away the moment you touch the throttle. Will give valves a check(haven’t done since I owned the bike(1 month ago) but they sound ok’ish lol.

Ok so carb balancing etc may reduce the noise (backlash in primary drive etc) but it won't effect the light.
You say you have replaced the trans ?
Therefore I guess you have split the casings ?
Is it possible you have omitted an "O" ring on re-assembly ?
I would suggest before you dig too deep you carry out an oil pressure test with a gauge, if the pressure is low at idle it could be as simple as a lazy pressure relief valve or a partially blocked pick up
