Horrible knocking noise coming from clutch case

Ok so I have a horrible noise coming from the clutch.

Info:
1989 KZ1000 J Police Motorcycle
Runs a little rough but smooths out when warmed up.

Noise is makes:

AT IDLE AND WARM (dont know if it does it cold wasn't paying attention)

With the cluch disengaged (HANDLE SQUEEZED TO THE BAR) No noise sounds amaizng lovely.

When the clutch is engaged (Handle not being touched) There sounds like a knocking noise or just straight grinding coming from the cover. I put my ear against the cover, which by the way is hot, and I can hear it grinding inside.

I am assuming its a transmission related issue because when you disengage the clutch all the noise goes away.

Now this is at IDLE NOT MOVING. I tried to move the shifter around but to my dismay I couldn't get the noise to stop. I am wondering if a fork is rubbing a gear or if the bearings are just straight bad.

Anyone know of any fixes. I currently have the clutch cover off and my plates look great!

Anything's possible. Even carburetors badly out of synch can make the clutch noisy.

That basket is removable without splitting the cases. As long as you have it this far apart, pull it and inspect it. Some noise when you shake it is to be expected from the cush drive springs.

Try to flex the big driven gear on the basket clockwise & counter clockwise, like the crankshaft is loading the gear. If you can move the driven gear at all, it's time to have the basket rebuilt.

If you already have it back together, put some carb synch gauges on it and see if they're out of synch badly. If they are, correct that first.

If you don't have any tools to pull the basket or synch the carbs, take the bike to someone who does and can because there's no magic wand in the OEM tool kit ;)

The work doesn't scare me I just want to make sure its not something stupid like a loose nut. Yes the carbs are pretty out of sync. I will get them tuned up but there is a little play on the clutch basic with the ring gear. Im sure it has to be rebuilt.

Looks like I gotta crack the cases oh joy!

did you try adjusting your clutch and see if that helps? Ive seen clutches make noise at idle when the clutch was going out.

clutch plates have a lot of meat on them i doubt its because the clutch is going bad. And no I haven't tried a clutch adjustment but I guess I could give it a shot. This noise makes me terrified of riding.

1989 Police model would have a J motor. You don't need to split the cases to pull the clutch basket in a J motor. It's pretty easy actually.

I think you just answered your question, "there is a little play on the clutch basic with the ring gear. Im sure it has to be rebuilt.".
Don't split the cases until you know it isn't the clutch basket. Mic the thickness of the plates(and steels) before you say they have plenty of meat on them. You can't use an "eyecrometer" on those and get it right without throwing a mic or caliper on them to know for sho.
When you get the basket of of the input shaft, spin the shaft and listen for odd noises.
Best regards.
