I want to know the type of 4 into 1 exhaust to get to keep my 1981 kz550 in the 80's. Anyone know where to point me?

A kerker would be your best choice but they are somewhat hard to find and when you do find one they are pretty costly. I've got two of them one black and one chrome. I might be willing to part with one of them. I don't believe that Kerker currently offers them new. Your other option would be a Mac which I have no experience with.

Well, definitely the classic icon would be the chrome or black Kerker megaphone system, and/or the aluminum canister K series. If you can find a new one, it will be in the $350 to $600 range. ($350 is a steal for a new old stock ). Kerker was bought out by Supertrapp a while ago.

EDIT: Gringo just beat me to it. :)

As he says, I think the only complete system available is the Mac. Available at Dennis Kirk.

I have one. It's definitely cheaply made, and sounds nothing like a Kerker, but the 4-into 1 pipe that it comes with is ok. I would get that, then look for a Kerker canister to use with it.

The Mac sounds very tinny and louder at idle. The Kerker with a street baffle is pretty quiet at idle, and is lot deeper in tone when you open the throttle.

Yoshimura or Bassani, had them both on my 550 in the mid-late 80's. Also, you will need to decide if you want to use the centerstand and change the oil filter without dropping the pipe. The "good" pipes eliminated the bends around the oil filter and center-stand.

Not sure I agree that the "good" pipes eliminated the bends around the oil filter and center stand. Denco / Hot Bike engineering offered pipes for the 550s (as well as others) that did not require removal to change oil / filter and allowed one to keep center stand. The pipes worked very well.

How much would we be talking to make you part with one? I have been looking around and they are expensive.

You could also check Vance and Hines. I have one on my 650B2 and I am very satisfied.

Several makers made them both ways, but the competition versions, hence the "good" term eliminated the extra bends and subsequent friction loss but at the sacrifice of the centerstand and oil filter clearance. The street versions may have worked well but the competition versions were obviously designed to perform better. This is for sport-bike pipes; drag pipes well the filter clearance issue may not exist when not concerning one's self with cornering clearance.
