photos bad camcaps...
19 Feb 2012 18:03
anyone want to weigh in on the condition of these?
the worst scratches are left to right, the crosshatching I've never seen before, this is cap #4,5,6
I don't remember this burnt bucket thing - normal?
My justification for the new jugs, hope you can see this island in the cylinder wall.
Cylinder 3 has the worst black coral growth.

what r we looking at? it would be better for u , if u put the modle and yr in your signature.
the pistons look like 10.25:1's
cam caps look like the shell bearings were spinning in them ?
the buckets have seen some heat but should be ok.

its an '82 750n. I don't know what shell bearings are. Any input on how bad the cam caps are?

ok, they didnt have shell bearings in that motor.KZ900/1000, do.
it looks like u ran low on oil up there. u may want to do a thorough cleaning of the oil galleries just to be sure. there should be a spec for cam to cap clearance that can be measured with plasti gauge. look in your manual. they do look pretty rough though.

Do the corresponding cam journals in the cylinder head show the scoring similar to that visible in the cam caps?

Mark is spot on - download or buy the Kawi service manual as it has the specs in there - internal bearing size, cam bearing size, and clearance to measure using plastigauge.

I wonder if a previous owner put the cams in dry after adjusting the valves?

You say the head was bead blasted 5K miles ago. Well that looks like the blast material came out from hiding in the oil galleys and went through the bearing surface, grit, ouch!
So back then you didn't do the rings? Or check the bore? You say you "Lapped" the valves, did you at least replace the stem seals?
Service manual, this is needed so you can measure and inspect the engine components.

good call. blast media could verywell be the culprit.

19 Feb 2012 20:51 - 19 Feb 2012 20:52Hard to believe even that could do so much damage. I'm believing the "sand in the oil" theory, what an awful waste. I think that head is hosed.650ed wrote: I wonder if a previous owner put the cams in dry after adjusting the valves?
