KZ650 Valve Adjust Help was created by shakyone
So, I went out and splurged on the tappet holder tool (57001-113) for my 1980 KZ650E1 LTD. It attaches to the lip of the block and holds down the bucket while you rotate the cam to provide space between the bucket and the cam. Then wiredgeorge's instructions say that you should be able to lift up the bucket opposite from the side being held down and remove the shim. I cant get the other side to lift, and if I did, what is to stop the tool from slipping off the bucket? AM i better off to just pull the cam?

YOU ARE RIGHT! I just looked at the instructions and they are for a 903 and 1015. Need A $75 tool for cheap?

There is a want adds/for sale area on this site. I'm sure that someone will want that tool and you shouldn't take much of a beating on it. Don't feel bad, what little I have learned was mostly from reading this site, repair manuals and asking questions. I still have a lot to learn.;)

The technique for doing a valve clearance adjustment is pretty much different for a KZ650. No tool is needed. If my tips on doing this for a 903/1015 were not marked clearly as such, I applogize. The 650 has shim under bucket type shimming. The clearances are first measured and then you compute which shim is needed. Then remove your cam chain tensioner and then the cam shafts themselves. The buckets come out best with a magnet. The shim sits in a recess under the bucket. You just swap shims, reinstall the cams and be sure to properly torque the cam caps and then remeasure the clearances. There are differing marks on the cams that are used for the under-bucket type shims so use a manual to align the cams properly to ensure proper cam timing (like the 750s are differently marked than the 650s, etc).

Taking buckets out with a magnet.....hmmm, never heard that one before, that's a keeper. This is why it's better for me to keep my flapping gums shut at times. I may have reshimmed once, but there are far more knowledgable people around here. I'm glad that one of them steped up to the plate.:)

Look at attachment "cams and valves" part number 5 is the bucket and part number 6 is the shim.
