Oil cooler for KZ650?
21 Sep 2011 12:23 - 21 Sep 2011 12:24
Hey, another dumb question :S
Saw this oil cooler on ebay. Looks like the oil goes in and out through the oil filter? Says that this oil cooler came from a spectre. If it would fit my kz650, sounds like an awesome upgrade. What do you think?

If you decide to put an oil cooler on the bike be sure it has a thermostat to control the oil flow. Otherwise on days that are not really hot your engine may not reach the correct operating temperature. Ed

I've got the same cooler and bracket on my 1000. That is a Derale cooler and bracket. The bracket would bolt right on the J bike frame, and has the two horn mounts with the rubber isolators. The bracket could be modified, or maybe weld some tabs on your frame. Personally I haven't seen the oil filter plate adapted to have the cooler lines coming from it. It would be at the oil pressure switch fitting, under the carbs on the J engine. But I suppose it works, but can't see from the picture just how. As a remote mount kit would take pressure from the oil galley and return it to it. That kinda makes me think that it may be taking pressure then returning to the sump?

Looked to me like the filter cover has been drilled, tapped, and those 90 degree Barbs added. Here is the stock pic. That is an aftermarket cooler, not a Kawasaki cooler.
