82 KZ650 with kick start?

Do some 82s come with a kick start? How much of a pain is it? Is it possible to install an electric starter?

All KZ650s came with electric starter. Before 1981 they also had a kickstarter; 1981 and later had no kickstarter. Ed

If it has a kickstart it is not an '82 engine. Maybe the engine was swapped sometime in the past.

The VIN should be stamped on the ride side of the motor right?

No. The VIN is stamped on the neck of the frame next to the white label (which also shows the date of manufacture, but may be missing). The engine serial number is stamped in the top of the right side of the engine. It would be highly unusual for that to match the VIN, but that number may be helpful in narrowing down the year of the engine. Ed

Pre 81 had electric and kick, 81 and later had electric only.

Both 81 and newer 650's and the four cylinder 750s can be modified by adding the earlier 650 kick starter, but you have to split the case to do it.
