82 KZ750 LTD timing marks ?
06 Sep 2011 17:43
My manual is in black and white and I can not see the pic that is in it and it is not real clear on where to put the timing mark . Should I put it on the T for TDC or on the mark just to the right of the T ? Here is a pick to show you what I am talking about .
Do I have it in the right place ?

Here is a pic that I marked . The red is the timing mark and the mustard is the T and the blue is the mark in question .

For other viewers, the T mark is "Top Dead Center" where the pistons are at their maximum height in the cylinder, and the F mark is the Fire mark to be aligned with the case mark at idle rpm, viewed through the timing inspection window.

Mine does not have an F on it would the mark after the blue mark be the fire mark ?
The reason I ask was I had the valve cams out and I wonted to make shore that I was on the right mark to set the cams . Luckily I use the right marks . I am going to recheck the valves to make shore that lash is ok and if they are OK I will be seeing if the old girl will fire up . Oh if anyone that dose not know about this . There is magnets under the pickups and if you do not put them back the way they come off . The bike will not run at least right . I put them back in wrong and had no spark .

The blue mark just like the guys said.
Sure you have an F mark. I can see it in your photo. It is further to the right and just before the 1

Thanks JR I was just wondering I went out and the F is there it is just faintly stamped . I lost my confidence on working on this bike . It is my first bike I ever worked on and for a while everything I did would go south on me so I took a brake from it and since I started to get my hand dirty the last couple of days things are starting to come together . Thanks for all the help guys . Hopefully I can get her running so I can get a couple of more miles out of her before the snow flies . I was told this bike would be a labor of love and it has proven it over and over again .

You should have the factory electronic pulse coil timimg whihc is (factory) set and forget.
In 8 years I have never checked my ignition timing. After being used to the old mechanical points this system is great. You should'nt need to check ignition timing unless someone has been messing with it.
Good luck

Am thinking the "timing window" and "marks" may be used to confirm the correct ignition timing as permanently preset by the factory.
But likely most useful to verify proper functioning of the timing advancer.
With a strobe type timing light, should be able to watch the advancer rapidly move back and forth as engine rpm is varied by blipping the throttle.
Good Fortune!
