Been busy this summer in the resurrection of a rescued 1976 KZ900 and need some 411 on how to change oil without removing the drain plug.

Its OK to make fun of my question, have not been able to afford a real mechanic to remove the stripped plug yet?

El cheapo rides again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If the Z1 and KZ's are the same (I think they are) you can remove the oil filter and get a lot of the oil out of the crankcase. Not a thorough job but at least you can change most of the oil and the filter too while you're at it.

I have used pipe wrenches, vice grips, and chisels to remove drain plugs previous owners have buggered up.

Just try and remove it after the engine is warm.

After I finally get them out I use my bench grinder to grind them down so a wrench will fit on them.

Just weld a steel bar to the drain plug. Ed

You can do it with one of those electric pumps. My headers used to block my drain plug so I would do changes by dipping the plastic hose of the electric pump down through the drain plug and slurping out the oil. I could get about 3 1/2 of the 4 quarts out that way. Pulling the headers every time was just a royal PITA.

I used a file on mine and squared it up enough to get a socket on it,the metal is soft and although it took some patience it worked. After you get it off you can square it up good an proper! Good luck...

By just changing the filter you would only get about 1/4 of a quart out. Try a small pipe wrench with a pipe on the end. The pipe wrench will tighten on the plug the harder you pull on it.

May also heat the plug and surrounding area with a propane torch immediately prior to removal attempt.

And, of course, after removal, replace with a new plug.

Good Fortune! :)
