cam wear was created by CTSZ1
I have a '74 903 cc engine that I am tearing down in preparation for possible rebuilding. It supposedly has 82,000 miles on it and was down to about 100 psi compression and smoked on startup and very little while running. Engine is very clean internally. Doesn't look like a 82,00 mile motor. Very little cylinder wear, at least at first blush.
Question is: when re-building these engines is it normal to re-use the cams? I have not done any measurements of the lobes and not sure what I need to measure but they look fine as do the cam bearings. What is typical on a well cared for stock engine?
Thanks

I believe it's pretty much normal to reuse them as long as they're still in spec and not all scratched up. I can't seem to find my manual at the moment, but there are maximum wear specs on the cam lobes, so you could measure with a micrometer and see if they're still useable. I don't know why you couldn't reuse them but I see them all the time on Ebay if you end up needing a set.
