I'm still in the process of looking over the engine on this bike before I try to get it running and last night I noticed a large nipple on the engine that wasn't connected to anything. After doing some research I figured out it was the crankcase breather (never heard of one until an hour or so ago). My question is what does it run to? I have found plenty of diagrams showing what the crankcase breather is and its components but I can't find anything to show me where the hose (which isn't on there, I'll have to get one) is supposed to connect to. Can anyone explain or show a picture of where it goes? Any help is greatly appreciated. :)

Take a look at the parts drawing for your bike on Kawasaki.com. If you open the 1st drawing "Air Cleaners/Mufflers" you'll see the little "L" shaped tube that connects between the breather outlet and the front of the airbox. Ed

Some riders get a metal K&N filter and clamp it to the breather hose. It'll be self oiling.

100% right.
Especially with the Z that had an issue with too much oil ending-up in the airbox and resulting plroblems.
Kawasaki had an fix for it that consited of removing 1 of the breather hoses inside and replacing it by a metal pipe to drain the oil back to the cranckase.
On my Z1B I have it connected to a plastic tank ( where the chain oil tank is on 72/74) and use it as an overflow ( not puke) tank exacly like the overflow tank on a cooling system

put a piece of clear tubing on there and run it up under seat and zip tie it to frame,then down towards rear wheel to let it vent.
that way it vents motor and keeps trash/water out of motor.
maybe its just me,but i think putting one of those metal filters in there would be too much of a restriction B)

Actually, my Pops installed that. So I'm guessing it did about 8-10k miles with that installed. The bike has 12k and I remember him saying one of the first things he did was install pods.

Would not restrict the free breathing of crankcase to less than designed by Kawasaki.

Venting into the air box likely allows slight vacuum assistance toward relieving pressures from the crankcase.

Imo, the aftermarket accessory filters attached to the crank case vent nipple are about as helpful as blinker fluid.

Where stock S-tube or L-tube connection to the air box risks fuel contamination into the crank case (due to lack of carb overflow circuits or non-functioning carb overflow circuits due to blockage or whatever reason), a large i.d. tube may be used to route the venting to underneath or behind the bike.

My Z1 with smoothbores (no overflow circuits) is routed from the vent over the swing arm, and has served perfectly forever, including cross-country.

I use the small filter on mine without any oil spurts. Maybe some do and some don't, possibly the breather baffles are different on the MkII engine? Only thing I've had happen is after a hard run I smell the fumes a bit more but the smell of hot Rotella T is man-perfume to me! :laugh:
