kz1100 LTD (83) Gas mileage?

I recently did a top end on my bike. Just returned from 1000 mile trip and I averaged only 31/32 miles to the gallon. Seem awfully low. Can anyone tell me what I should be expecting? bike runds great! But?? my Prius get way better milage.

How bad were u hammering it?My 82 KZ gets maybe 40 cruising around .These really arent economy bikes,but 30-31 sounds low to me.Done a good tune up to include valve adjust and carb synch lately?That might help.Checked tire pressure?Good luck and I am sure others here will have some good thoughts.bj

My '79 KZ750 twin seems to average about 40mpg if that provides any basis of comparison.

Was loaded with gear which was not very aerodynamic. Bag, tent, sleeping bags, etc. and it was pretty windy in west Texas. Ran average of 70/75mph sometimes a bit higher. Valves and carbs were recently adjusted/sync'd. Seems to me I should be getting in the high 30's, anyway. Black soot in muffler may indicate "rich" running, would that make a significant difference?

Nice bike. Pipe coloration seems to indicate the bike is tuned pretty good and running about right.My Vance and Hines is always a little sooty so dont believe that makes much difference. Might pull a plug or two and check insulator color--if they are brownish-tan in color,no problem.If the plug(s) is black,sooty or oily looking,u may have a rich running issue.Are u running the stock gearing which I guess would be 15 tooth front,39 rear? Stock tires? 75 mph on a stock geared KZ means ur turning pretty good rpm.Loaded with gear and a headwind,my guess is that ur mileage isnt that bad.One other thought--how is air filter?Changed it lately? I see ur running stock air box as I am..bj

Bump. Sorry. If u take another long road trip,u might think about going up one tooth on your front sprocket OR down two teeth on your rear. This would allow u to cruise 75 mph without turning so many rpm.bj

I would think you should get mid 40's on the hi-way. I got 46 on my 1100 shafty, and 50 mpg on my 1000 LTD. They can get good mileage if set up right. Both have fairings and the LTD bags and was loaded etc for 3K + miles.

I'm going to check the carb jetting and double check everything else. I guy I bought the bike from (original owner) had, at one time, four into one exhaust and KN air filters. which required re-jetting of carbs. He said that he had everything set back to stock when he put the standard exhaust and air filters back on, but now I'm not sure that he did. thanks for feedback.
