81 1000 CSR ,,

I posted some of this in chit chat But might be better here ,, I got my 1000 running today with lots of smoke , and back fires ,, It did clear up after a short while but was blowing gas back out of the carbs but then clearing up again ,, it was loseing Cyls. if I dropped the Idle down below 1,500 ,, I also did a compression test from left to right 120, 110, 90 120, this was done warm and the carbs open ,, anyway what would be my fist step ?? Run it a little long to see if a valve is sticking ? Or go ahead and check valve clearances ? I hope to get the stator problem fixed soon , I am on the look for a good used one .. I would start with checking the valve clearance sounds like the intake side may be tight. Also check the cam timing if the intake cam is retarded (1 tooth)it will cause this to happen(pop through intake ) as the valves are not closed before compression stroke begins.Good luck
