heli coils

Im going to put heli coils in my kz 650 cam caps, how deep should I drill and tap? It sounds like the coil should be just below the surface, does it need to be drilled as deep as the bolt? Thanks

just did the far left side on my 77 650 and i only went a hair deeper then the deck.holding so far.happy wrenching!
