shift fork interchangeability?
14 Mar 2011 06:45
I am all ready to put my bottom end together for my 1428 kz1000 motor but I realized I am missing the shift shaft and both forks on it! I looked at schnitz, ape, and other places and its quite a bit to replace new. Found some used for 75 and bidding on some now but will most likely get outbid. Do any other kz's other than the 900 have the same forks? J's maybe?

You can check interchangeability on Kawasaki's website.
It looks like all 900s and 1000s prior to 1981 use the same parts.

jordan,
are you talking about the shift shaft and the forks that are on it under the countershaft cover?
the claw that turns the drum?
or the actual shift forks that slide the gears?

Hi Jordan, I sent you PM.
Need a refresher course on shift forks.
Are the 2 identical?
I know the big one is on the drum.
These 2 have a T1 and the other has a T2 on it
They are the same and not bent.

Not sure about using the T1 and T2 forks in another position. I think there is a T6 also. I do know you can't use a J-model fork or any part of that trans. with a KZ trans. Otherwise, all the trans. parts for a Z1/KZ900/kz1000 from 1973-1980 will interchange. I believe some of the 1981 models were also of the KZ motor and not the J model.

Hi all, here is another picture of the end of shaft. The shaft is solid and has that little clip with a roller on it.
The Z1-KZ 900 manual and items on ebay don't have that piece on the end. Might from a 78-79 KZ1000
Maybe someone can verify this end of shaft.
Thanks

Correct...the shift forks are the same for the Z1/KZ900/KZ1000 (early) line while there is a difference between late and early KZ1000 shift shaft.
