It can be done but it ain't easy...use a small SHARP punch and make two or four, start with two, evenly spaced small holes, or drill, around the outside of the seal in the STEEL just inboard of the OD. Then screw two small sheet metal screws opposite each other into the seal and pry out with a STRAIGHT pulling motion. Use hard screws like a auto trim screws. If the screws pull out of the seal try another set of holes or pry out with small screwdriver stuck in the holes. Collapsing the OD inward ,once you've exausted the screw method, will make the seal OD smaller or loose. Be carefull to not nick or damage the trans cover where the seal sits or the shift shaft. Inspect the new seal before you try it to get an idea of what your dealing with. GOOD LUCK! I have pulled many types of seals this way, smaller seals ARE more difficult.

the end of the shaft is square, does this complicate sliding the new seal on ????

Just remove the trans cover it's not that hard. It's a damn sight easier than messing with that little bitty seal.
