Open Headers? Jetting? was created by pennmktg
Hey folks.
Gotta 94 KZ1000 Police I'm building a chopper with. Can I run open headers without jetting? I understand that the police has larger jets from the factory. Plus I can't seem to find any jet kits for a police to begin with!

It will run like crap. The needle taper is designed to match the flow characteristics of the intake air box, engine, and exhaust system. Opening the pipes basically throws it out the window.

Z1 probably has jets if you are set on doing it.

Who is Z1 and where can I find them? I new to kz. This is my first project and I just want to build a somewhat period correct style as the 70's four cylinder digger choppers. Now as I understand it the police kz already has oversized jets. Is that not correct? I'm having trouble understanding why a kz engine wouldn't be like any other. Simply open the exhaust and jet it up and she should breath and run better.

It will run fine with open headers if you re-jet it to a larger size. I did it to my KZ. On ebay there is a company that takes all the information you give them, as far as bike, what your are doing to it, ie pod filters, straight pipes, altitude where you live. Then they will do all the figuring on Jet sizes you need, send them and instructions on what to do. its very reasonably priced. I believe I searched carb jet kits for my kz. Good luck

You should be able to get jets at your local shop. They're cheep and common items that most carry in stock. I went with 22.5 pilots and 127.5 on the mains for my 81 Police with glass packs (very much like open) and the bike runs quite well.

I looked up the company name for you. It is 6 sigma. In ebay I typed 6 sigma jet kit and a bunch of different ones came up. if they dont have the one you need then just send them a message and ask them about your bike, They will be able to hook you up. cuts out all the figuring so you know itll be right. Good luck

Thanks so much for the advice about 6 Sigma. Great prices and as you said, the whole package comes to fit my modifications and altitude.
