OK, I'll start the flaming - FRAM filters are junk; I use K&N. Here's an unscientific comparison. If you look at the pics and read the comments I think you'll agree that FRAM should not be your first choice. Even though the comparison is done between can type filters for a Honda instead of the open element type used by KZs, I'm quite sure the relative quality of the different filters still applies (for example, compare the number of pleats).
Motorcycle Oil Filter Comparison
Interesting, verrry interesting. I've heard slams on Fram filters before, but no substantial or documented reasons for them. I've been using Fram in my car, truck and motorcycle for years and never had a oil related failure on any of them.
To check on the scooter filter I hauled my old one out of the trash and cut it open. By the criteria used in the link posted here the Fram CH 6013 as sold by Z1E would score quite high. The end caps and case are heavy gauge metal with a rubber grommet on each end to seal to the motor, and the O-rings are included. There was no excess glue on either end oozing out to raise questions about quality control. In fact I had a heck of a time trying to pry off the end cap and resorted to a hack saw to open the case. There were 55 pleats in the filter media and the media was a fairly thick paper so more pleats would have crowded the space available possibly restricting the flow of oil. Could be important considering the low pressure available in the Z motors. The biggest difference was in the size of the filter area. The KZ filter was 3" high whereas the ones tested were only about 1-1/2" The areas was 206 sq. in. for the KZ filter.
So to my unscientific eye the relative quality of the two types is not consistent. Perhaps the fact that the canister type hides the crappy construction whereas in the open cartridge type the construction is there for all to see dictates better quality construction in the cartridge filters.
So for my cars and truck I'll look for Purolators, for the bike I'll be OK with Fram until someone shows me that the filter media sucks.
I gotta get a life. Here I am cutting open old oil filters. YUUK!!!

I never had any problem! But I also changed the oil every 1000 miles, just for the hell of it.
I also used to get "ShellCraft Aviation Oil" SAE grade 70 weight. Thats right 70 weight. This oil was not available to the general public. Summer time of course.
And I beat the snoot of of these bikes!
They don't make stuff like they used to!!!!!

try ps 4942 for napa filterNapa's page doesn't have Kawi's anymore, just Honda and some other rubbish. I'll have to stop in and see if they still make the filter for my bike and what it runs.

Geeze...as boring as this thread has gotten I might as well have asked whether creamy or crunchy is better...
I found www.napafilters.com which has a cross reference search. Thanks for the part number, though.

Thanks, they closed the Napa on my side of town and it's a 45 minute round trip to the nearest one now. I'll probably just order the Emgo because I Z1Enterprises.
