Well, it might be if you are in europe...

As i will soon have to shim my valves for the Andrews cams, I asked a fellow racer who runs a KZ1000 in vintage road racing where does he source his shims in Italy.

Well, he discovered that quite a few european cars have 13.42mm diameter shims and that he can get used ones almost for free from friendly car mechanics as most of these car models are a bit obsolete. he's been using these shims for the last four years without issues.

using them only requires enlarging the cavity in the retainer by .5mm (stock are 13mm) and your set... good for 650's, 750's, 900's etc...

look for the 13.42mm ones in the list under Citroen, Fiat-Lancia, Peugeot, quite nice size range too for big clearances :)

And send me a penny for each one you get ;)

Those 29mm shims do fit, but the shims have a hole in them... ...I've been reluctant to install any in my engines - although what is nice is they come in smaller increments.

I believe that some the BMW K75 bikes also use 29mm on top of bucket shims too.

It's the 32 mm shims for the twins that are rarer than honest politicians.

Seems logical that a hole would be even worse than a dimple.

The first Z1 shims had a center dimple (or naval) which might possibly cause it to crack, and which was superseded early on by a non-dimpled version, with recommendation that any such dimpled shims be replaced.

Even the OEM 13mm shims fracture. I've see many of them in motors I've torn down over the years. Those bikes all lived a hard life ;)

If anyone is going to try to run real thin shims with S.O.B. setup, be careful! The shim should never set below the retainer any amount greate or equal to the button thickness on the bottom of the bucket....and even that is pushing your luck ;)

yeah seems like that would be a recipe for pushing down the retainer and losing a keeper at high rpms. eeeek! :S

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

I remember many of the drag racers wouldn't go under a 2.30mm shim for fear of them shattering.
