Stripped oil drain threads was created by vosberdv1975
My threads are stripped where my oil drain plug goes. my question is, if I use a self tapping oversized drain plug will that be too long and interfere with anything internal on the engine? i've never tore the bottom end down so i dont know if it hits the Crank or anything at all.

what bike?.....swapping an oil pan is a pretty easy exercise
on a 1000 and you get the bonus of getting out years of smeg buried in the corners and finding trinkets that make you say"WTF is this"?.....

I would be worried about self tapping as there might be metal left when done that sits in the oil pan? I would think chasing with a tap or swapping the pan would be a better route.

I vote for pulling the oil pan. It can be done with the bike on the centre stand. This way you can see what kind of gunk has accumulated. It's also easier to tap threads while standing at your work bench rather than sprawled on the floor. The oversized plug idea will work just fine.

Not sure which bike but isn't your oil drain plug in the round oil filter cover versus the pan itself?

Including information about bike year and model may elicit better responses. And it's easy to put in your signature where it will automatically appear in posted messages.
When done, the signature information appears in all posts, past and future. And may be changed as often as desired.

Here's how to do it:

Meanwhile, the swami says it's a 1980 KZ440.

Good Fortune!

I had this issue when I was 18 and changing the oil in my bike. I think I ended up with 1.5x the correct amount of oil. The elderly gentleman at the Kawi shop was not impressed...he showed me the proper method to change the oil...

I stripped the threads on my old GS1000. I bought one of those universal rubber drain plugs at the parts store. It worked fine for a couple thousand miles before I sold it.
