so im kinda new to this.. so i apologize in advance
so i started working on my gpz550 last week and i replaced the vavle cover gasket and the head gasket.. i also adjusted the carbs on it (wich i did correctly)
but when i tried to jump start it today it wasint starting at first... so i started messin with it. it only started with full choke.. and then it bumbed to about six or seven thousand rpms
and i could turn of the choke and rev it and it would stay started but it would try droping to low, so i had to constantly rev it up. oh yeah... and it was running ruff to...
so i dont know whats going on with it. iv been tld it could be the timing but that doesint make sense to me
any ideas???

unless the bike was warm, starting with the choke on isnt that unusual IMO, check idle adjustment and throttle linkage as well, vacuum lines like Larry said, double check carb adj
make a list and do some reading in ur FSM, and dont get excited
same thing happened to me once, I thought I had the carbs adjusted correctly and I didnt, i could see the linkage not returning to position and figured it out
BTW
welcome to the forum

i didint do much to the carbs they were allready set right....
and all the air hoses are on right... i triple chacked them...
and i got it pretty warmed up i kept it revved while i had it started and every time i turned it off it still wouldint start without the choke...
um what should i exactly check on the carb?

I'm no friend of those TK carbs but that is the way they they worked from the factory. Full choke to start then you must reduce the amount of choke shortly after the start up to prevent the run away RPMs. Then depending on the air temps you have to wait for some time for the motor to warm up before you can add throttle or ride the bike. Yes syncing the carbs will help some but those carbs made the 550's a cold blooded bike. Also, the 550's were very sensitive to a healthy battery. A weak battery and low RPM's caused either a very rough idle or stalling before the motor fully warmed up. Hope this helps before you tear into the carbs.

Here's a mod to reduce the runaway idle thing and make starts more consistent.
This is only for the 81 gpz550 (and other KZ550's). The later gpz550's are different.
