u can us a bypass valve on them as well, manual or automatic, takes care of the warm up issue and when not needed, i run one on my other bike with automatic bypass, Jagg makes but I'm sure others do as well

Here is the "J" motor oiling, the low chart shows the oil cooler will be right after the pump, out of the switch housing and then loop back to the switch housing. @ #11

It's not that the heavier oil(20-50W) helps cool better ,it's that the heavier oil does not thin out as much when reaching higher temps, therefore providing better protection when temps are higher.
A cooler can never hurt, unless you are always riding in cold temps. But for even these Ohio summers, a cooler can only help extend the life of critical engine components.

it also depend on the engine, even up north if ur running a bored motor and hits in the 90's (which it does these days) there could be issues depending on the size over bore
