Valves are within spec, bike has 23k miles, I thought I'd find at least a couple out of spec. Only intake on #2 cylinder was close - the allowable range of clearance is 0.05mm to 0.15mm -- all the other valves were between 0.075 and 0.12mm except intake valve on #2 which was at 0.066mm. Good enough for now.

I think I may have found the problem causing me to fish around, checking valves, battery, air cleaner etc. -- I began checking the bike over like this due to popping and backfiring.

Well today during the preparation to do the valve check I found the #2 fuel injector's electric connector was disconnected. Now I may have disconnected that while I was removing the gas tank fuel hose but I doubt it.

I am topping off the battery right now so I haven't run it yet. That will come tomorrow.

I have already checked:
- valve clearance
- battery (has a nearly-new battery in it)
- fuel delivery

Would an injector that was unplugged from the computer cause backfiring?
