So I was planning on rebuilding my engine, I pulled the head, block and pistons and I noticed that the connecting rods have allot of play in them, they rock back and forth if you grab the small end, not slide, rock. I take it that is not normal? how do I fix it?

Should have some rock, side to side, you can use a feeler gauge to check big end rod clearence, should be no more than.024in, if more you will have to send crank off or get a replacement.

Normal - as said.

Pull up on the rod with one fist, then whack it downward with the other open hand. If you hear a distinct metallic click, then that rod bearing is shot.

Best of luck.
