Well as far as all models go … I don’t know. But I can tell you this, the 1978 Z1-R had one but it was mounted under the seat. It was for emergencies only and it didn’t fold up. This may have been the start of the "no kickstart" movement. I bought a stock one and installed it on mine. I like 'em.

1980 was the last year for all 1000's, except maybe for the police bikes. I think they went until '81. The new "J" models came in '81 and no longer had a kick start. My 1980 LTD 1000 was one of the last to have it.
The Kaw List:

1980 KZ1000A had it, 1980 KZ1000B LTD had it, 1980 Z1R and ST had it under the seat so yes, 1980 was the last.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Is it possible to retrofit older kickstart hardware on a newer 1983 J engine? If not then why

No, the cases on the J engine were changed and will not accomidate the kickstart.

Are they drastically different or could something be modified to make it work? I cant seem to find any good pics for comparison. Or if not then Could you just use the older style cases?

From what I've read around here and other places looks like the 1981 Police Special was last. Good thing I have one.
