Does anyone know if a 1980 kz 650 engine will fit in a 1982 kz550 ltd frame? Any help is appreciated.

It will not bolt in. The 650 is slightly larger. You can probably do some cutting and welding to get it to fit, though.

I thought that stock for stock the 550 was a quicker bike due to the 6 speed.

Teserosa, You are correct sir. At least w/ the KZ550A, (not sure about the LTD) Recieved my "schooling" in the day, while playing w/ a GS1000, KZ 650,CB750/836 on Ortega Highway. admited, the 550 had a Moriwaki head & Kerker exhaust & was piloted by a talented lightweight, but the fact is/was, the 550 set the pace & could go away at will. Plus, you can bolt in a gpz 550 motor as long as you mount an oil cooler.

I am surprised that the GS1000 didnt suck all the rest up its airbox. Those were/are some quick, good handling bikes.bj

I haven't ridden my 550 LTD in a while... (hopefully spring) but I can attest that it can handle its own with my 750 LTD no problem. I sure do miss it.

My dilema. I had, have a kz650f together and running, bought it with a 550 nltd in a box. Also have a 550ltd rolling chasis, really nice bike but no motor. The kz 650 nis a bit too tall for me the 550 is perfect. Wanted to put the 650 nin the 550 nchasis. Maybe I should just put the 550 box togehter? Want something to ride in the spring.

Hey I measured the 650 frame and the 550 frame today. NOT Doable without quite abit of cutting and welding. Guess I live with what I have. Thanks for the input folks. I'm sure i'll have more stupid questions in the future.

Solved my problem. I just bought a mint 550ltd rolling chasis. Must have been stored indoors for the last 30 years. It needs a motor and I have one. Thanks for all the help and advise.
