Tune your mixture screws properly.

Without special tools: Turn all the mixture screws simultaneously to add fuel to the idle/pilot circuit.
The rpms will rise as you do. as you continue to do so, at about a half turn at a time, listen for the idle to drop. Stop, go back a half turn, and set your idle.
Now turn them all other way till the idle drops again, counting the number of turns. Once you have established that number, turn/add fuel screws half the number counted, to the "between the drops" spot.

Now for the PITA part: Repeat the procedure for each individual screw.

Look/listen for the rpm drops, and give the engine a couple seconds at each setting to change.

This will get you really close if you take your time, and are patient with her (not nervous).

Point a big fan at the headers for good measure.

If the point at which the highest idle is found is out past 3+ turns, then you have other problems, like probly incorrect pilot size, in which case an increase of one size would correct the issue.

thanks again for the help.

the mufflers are aftermarket. nothing here, baffles still intact.

i need to leak test again, i am second guessing myself for sure.

the idle/mixture screws are set will get set this weekend, as well as the valve lash.

the carbs have all new jets. in fact, this condition existed even before i rebuilt/cleaned them..hence the rebuilding.

i will let you know how i make out with the igniton timing, leak test, and idle/mixture screws...

thanks again!

Hey Patton, I like what you did with that photo. Is there any chance I can get you to add in a label for the rubber stop glued onto the arm?

Something like what I have below, but using your font etc. I'd like to borrow that for my website if I can.

Something like this okay?
Image size all right?
Be happy to further refine as needed.

Good Fortune! :)

allo!

just had it running and sprayed some wd40 all over the carb sockets and carbs.....no change in anything. i am gonna hook up an aux tank and set the idle mixture screws and sync the carbs. hopefully that gets me somewhere.

Perhaps the problem is more throttle cable related than carb related.

Sometimes throttle cables are adjusted too tightly, and thereby disallow carb's easy return to full closure.

Or the inner cable may be frayed, or in need of lubrication.

Or the throttle grip tube may not be easily and smoothly turning back and forth over the handlebar.

Or maybe there's dirt inside the throttle grip where the cables attach.

Or maybe the rubber handlebar throttle grip is pushing against end of the handlebar.

Or maybe the carb return spring is too weak or incorrectly installed.

Could test throttle cable involvement by removing throttle cables from the carb, and rev engine by hand-opening carb, then release and see whether problem persists.

Good Fortune! :)
