Hello again, I have an 79 kz 1000 st.
Seems my exhaust cam is in 180, and I suspect bent valves. since I have zero compression on all 4 Cylinders.

Now before I take off top end, I am looking online and it seems I need to replace the chain tensioner bold with a diffent one, to lock it in place.

The part online is saying Bolt #110B0616... can I find this bolt somewhere already on the bike?

If I can find this bolt then I just replace it with the one that was already in the Tensioner, but since its longer it will lock it?

this is my first time taking off a top end, so any help/guidance is always appreciated.

thanks again.

I dont think it would hurt anything by removing the entire cam chain tensioner, there should be no need for a different bolt. It appears someone else put your cams back in?

I picked up this bike for free, seems cam was put in incorrect.

In the service manual it say before removing the cams to rotate, to lock the chain tensioner.

I assume this is to no get any lose on the chain when i add slack to the top?

The bolt is located on the side of tensioner it is seen in the picture you provided. now to remove the tensioner you do not have to do anything with the bolt, but to install the tensioner you loosen the bolt push the plunger back and tighten bolt just enough to lock the plunger in, then install the tensioner after cams properly timed then unlock the side bolt to release plunger then tighten bolt up you are finished.

thanks for the info about how to re-install.But all i want to do is remove the top end to check the valves and rotate the cam to correct position. In the manual it says to LOCK the chain tensioner with a different bolt?

does this make any sense?
its an automatic tensioner

All you do to lock the tensioner is use a long 6mm bolt. You can use a valve cover bolt or any other common 6mm bolt you can find. Length is not important as long as it's long enough to contact the rod in the tensioner to hold it. Don't remove the tensioner which won't do you any good as if you do this or remove the cams without first locking it, the rod will extend and it will have to be disassembled and retracted in the bore before use.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

If your your timing is correct EXCEPT your exhaust cam is 180 degrees out, you will not have any bent valves. Reinstall the exhaust cam properly, double check your timing , then do another compression check.

When you do this work to your engine make sure your bike is level. Either use your center stand or block up your side stand. If it's not level your camchain might not align properly with the necessary gears causing serious problems.
