I rebuilt the starter clutch on my 1982 GPz750 and I'm putting everything back together.

I'm having a hard time putting the nut back on. The bike is in gear with a penny wedged in the secondary shaft gear and I tried applying the brake while using the torgue wrench and its hard to apply any real pressure. I don't see how I could get it to 100 ft/lbs. I see Z1 sells a clutch hub tool that looks like a pair of vice grips. If you use that tool, do you need another set of hands or will it brace against something so I can use two hands on the torgue wrench? I had a hard time removing the clutch hub nut and had to use an impact gun. I see where guys have made tools out of old clutch rings, but I don't have any old ones and need to get this buttoned up ASAP.
Thanks
Nick

I had the same problem when I installed the clutch hub/basket in my 650. What I ended up doing was sticking a plank of wood in my rear wheel up against the swingarm, put the bike in gear and tighten the nut (obviously this method will not work with wire wheels).

Note that as you tighten the hub nut clockwise with the bike in gear and the chain installed, the bike will attempt to move backwards, so you need to rest the plank in the wheel against the underside of the swingarm. Don´t use too thin a plank either, I first tried with a broomstick and it snapped like a twig.

I´d also recommend sitting on the bike while tightening the nut, the torque required is enough to move the bike around, pull it off the stand or even tip it over.

May sound like a bit of a crude approach, but it served the purpose.

Thanks. I think I tried everything but the piece of wood... Glad I stepped away from it and asked. I'll give that a try tonight.

If you took it off with an impact, you can put it back on that way too. Torque is not critical as long as the nut is "tight".

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

This is what I have done with my KZ motors. Thousands of miles and many years later, no trouble at all.

Thanks guys. I used a penny, a block of wood, and the torque wrench first. I then gave it a quick hit with the impact gun.

If I had to do this again, I'd buy a 100 lb-ft torque rod to use with the impact wrench. I have a electric impact wrench capable of over 200 lb-ft. This torque rod limits the torque of the impact gun to value specified.
