I bought a 1980 KZ 1000 shaftie in June 2009 not running but souper clean. The reason it was left aside was it was not charging. I laid down $500 bucks and it sat next to the KLR for a year. with the help of you I took it down clean the carbs replaced the rectifier and other maintenance it is awesome 170 miles.Noticed it is leaking oil out the chrome cam cover. I also snapped the clutch cable today so I will take it down and replace the cable and VC gasket.I have been able to get most of this done without posting(site rocks. I Am confused about best way to replace acoording other post.IE,sealand around the chrome caps or where to put tack. More sugesting please?

Any high temp rated permatex gasket maker is fine, I like moto-seal myself as it is thin and easy to apply, and stands up to the heat.

The end caps can be wrapped 6-7 times with teflon plumbers tape before installing. Clean all gasket surfaces with a high flash point solvent. Apply a very thin coating to both gasket surfaces. By very thin, I mean just smear it on there with a fingertip, like less than 1mm thin.

Than seal her up and use the recommended torques for the cover bolts. Run the engine till warm, then let cool completely for an hour, and re-tighten.

Do it, just DO IT.

DO NOT apply sealant to both sides of gasket! Apply only to the top side so it sticks to the valve cover or apply none to either side. Ed
