77 kz650 won't go into neatral when running

Hi all,this is my 1st post I picked up a 1977 kz650 a week ago the bike is a blast, but I have a problem shifting into neutral with the bike running, so while sitting at a stop light I have to hold the clutch. once the bike is shut off I can pop it from first up to N The bike is pretty clean just about no rust,or leaks. THe clutch cable does feel a little tight. Also just in case, does anybody know of a good bike mechanic in Monmouth co . N.J. Thx

That's usually caused by the clutch dragging. Either the clutch needs adjusting or maybe the oil is a little too thick. Or the clutch could have a problem but cable adjustment is the most common cause.

Welcome aboard! If you don't have a manual you definitely should get one. Get a Kawasaki factory service manualfor your specific year/model. They're always available on eBay. It will save you $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Ed

Has the clutch push-rod been adjusted properly before the cable free play? Also lubing the pivot assy under the sprocket cover may have never been done, probably would smooth up you operation of lever to cable feel. Less chance for a cable to break with smooth operation, oh lube the cable with a cable oiler.
