I'm thinking of changing the buckets for SOB's but does it saver weight (inertia) and thus raising rpm's (less floating valves?)
Does it make sense for a 1200cc kz with 0.395 webcams?

I would hesitate to switch unless I was running cams with a lift that required it (to prevent the shims from being spit off the shim-on-top bucket). Don't believe there is much benefit to them otherwise and makes adjustment a p-i-t-a.

Plummen is right, valve adjustments are much harder.
If I remember correctly, the 650 style valve train is like 30% lighter. It is not worth it for most people.

I do have also a KZ 650 and some engines/heads. I also do have alle teh shims of the 650 and 900. But if it's not worth the effort I'll leave it on top.
Thanks for you input!!

I am running SOT on a bike with .420 cams and go to 9500 all the time and have not had any problems at all. The bike has been in this configuration for over two years and runs just fine with SOT. Make sure that you use good valve springs and do not allow the cam gaps to get over spec and you will be fine. With high performance top ends, you have to check and adjust cam gaps more often, using SOB will just make that so much more complicated and difficult. If you want a bit lighter valve train, go to titanium keepers.
