Z1R Turbo setup? was created by Samwell
I've been digging around looking for information on this animal. I have a normally aspirated '78 kz1000, plenty of time, interest and the cash to do it properly. What I'm looking for is what kind of power output it had (so I guess what my engine will handle), type of turbo used, any other mods made (like frame reinforcements).

so far I'm guessing at:
1. 8.5:1 pistons (1075cc) from APE racing, along with their wrist pins.

2. a turbo from Garrett

3. Fuel injection setup instead of a carb. RB racing apparently can fuel inject anything, or I could try megasquirt I guess.

4. weld the crank

5. Reinforce the steering head & swing arm.

I'm not looking to stuff 200 ponies through the motor. Stock is about 86bhp, I figure 120-130 or so isn't asking too much.

Like I said, any info on the original is greatly apreciated.

Sam

there was a complete turbo setup on classified section a while back.i got some pictures of it somewhere, but couldnt get details for size of turbo.the stock turbos on z1rs are kinda big and slow,im going to order my next one from mr turbo when i get ready so i dont have to deal with the local shmuck who burned me the last time:whistle: i definately think the fuel injection is the way to go,i want to mount my next one in front of motor with fuel injection.goodluck, happy wrenching!

Would strongly suggest you replace #3 with Mr. Turbo.
Also put the big cylinder studs in it.

120-130rwhp is totally possible without a turbo- and much cheaper than that!

Couple guys here have hit that with thier 900s with 420 cams and such

1975 Z1 B 900- soon to be heavily modded

wire, talk to me about turbos. have a better source than the one you are speaking of. much better.

fuel injection will make for a VERY streetable machine.

a small turbine, fuel injected, low-compression engine would make for a FUN project.

no reason to rule out mega-squirt for that side. you can build a custom manifold with a single t/b. integrate the injectors with that setup, hang the turbo out front. hell, you could even intercool a setup like this.

This is good stuff. What I really need is to try and find out what type/size of turbo they used so I can use one thats similar. I'm assuming of course that what they picked was ideal for the kz1000.

thanks...Sam

It was definitely a Rajay, probably an F40. The F40 will go to around 250hp with the boost turned up but the Z1RTCs made about 150 as they came, which was a lot at the time. Rajays are old hat nowadays though.

thanks, that will help a lot. I can match up a modern unit to my machine and use 150 ponies as a safe limit.

I have a garrett T25 with internal wastegate, I would let go CHEAP.

Originally the stock turbo for my DSM.

60K miles, always had the oil changed, no shaft play.

$100 + shipping?

i agree with you lorcan the old rajay setup's are old news now,but is it worth mentioning when they are dailed in correctly on say a 900 or 1000 kawi they sure are fun/hard to beat, the original rajays were designed to work on very little oil pressure something we all know something about, they can take alot of abuse i have seen guys run old ATP kits with shitty harley carbs, cheap oil that they never change and still these turbo's hual ass, last for ever, i have an old blake kit that i have had on at least 25 different stock 900/1000's hundreds of pass's on it that old rajay has no shaft play, spools up great, take a good solid runnin completely stock 900/1000 kawi bolt on an old ATP kit or any older kit with a rajay use a mikuni 42 flat, a holly blue pump, a dyna 2000, and you will have a affordable, reliable, extremely fast, fun bike that will beat just about any non turbo new crotchrocket.
