re-using exhaust gaskets was created by stonemaster
opinions ? think i may still have a tiny exhaust leak, tested using butane around collars and nothing but I hear a faint ticking after riding a couple of miles that sounds exactly like the much louder version of my previous exhaust leak, I mean exactly the same just quieter. Its not just valve noise either. I used the Suzuki gaskets which pretty muck took care of the major exhaust leak. I did not use Permatex copper on them however , should I re-use?? I do have a set of new copper stock gaskets and some used copper gaskets as well.

if theyre solid copper gaskets you can heat them with a torch till theyre red hot and toss in a bucket of water and reuse them,if theyre the crimped style like stock kaw gaskets pitch em B)

Still recovering, some days are better than others.

Wow, I just walked in from the garage wondering if I can re-use those exhaust gaskets.

If they're crimped type, they'll show a seam, correct?

Those are great gaskets. I suggest you take a couple feet of some hose, fuel line will work, and place it to your ear, but not in it. Then check for noises, especially around the suspect exhaust. Did you happen to check with a straight edge the header flanges? Torque it down in steps evenly? And a re-torque after a good run?

all of those, it only shows up after a couple of miles when the engine is good and warm, she's put up for the night so I may do some rechecking tomorrow, the flanges were not all in a line however the one that was really bad (the one with the BAD exhaust leak) I heated and bent back into position.

Thanks OMR!

Wow, those suzuki gaskets look really nice. I've never tried them. They look like they might be re-usable too? Do they crush? Is there copper inside of them? Is it basically like the Kaw gaskets with the material over it? Can I keep asking questions? When will it stop? Why can't I stop now? Do I have a problem? Can someone help me?

OK, stopped it.... :P

Yea i kinda guessed that would be the case. Like I said i got copper new and old, I read somewhere of someone doubling up using a really flat one with a good one and some copper permatex with excellent results. Cant remember where though

I used Suzuki GS550 XN85 GSX-R750 gaskets on my 82 KZ1000 LTD and overtightened the first time. They unwound like a watch spring. Second set used gasket sealer and just tightened them. No leaks and they are less than $2 apiece on Z1. Why would you reuse them?
