no return on shifter pedal was created by Kitten Tooth
I was sitting on my 76' KZ400D3 the other day that i am using for the engine in my Kart project. I was rolling the bike back and forth and messing with the shifter pedal. I noticed that when i pushed it down out of neutral into first with my foot, the pedal would stay down and i would have to help it back up with my foot. On my KZ1000, when you push the pedal down to down shift or pop it into 1st to push start it, the pedal re-springs back up by itself.. is this a serious problem with the transmission?

Probably a broken return spring(they wear out from use).

Can i run the motor and can it drive stuff with that broken spring? i can just help it snap back up after i push it down right? or do i need to get into the transmission?

under that, there is the shaft that the shifter pedal goes on and i think it just sticks out of the crank case. would it be a pain in the ass to replace that spring? Im gonna look at some parts diagrams too.

If your rolling the bike back and forth, and you click it down into gear as you are still pushing/pulling on the bike, the pedal will stay down. Its normal if the pressure is still there, just roll the bike back/opposite direction and the pedal should pop back up.

The tranny can do this when strained without the input shaft rotating on lots of different bikes/atvs.

If it does not return, even with bike standing still, then yes the spring is probly too worn/broken.

You have to remove the sprocket cover, and then the shifter linkage cover plate that covers the linkage and trans-rod access behind the sprocket.
