Is your bike registered by the frame # or the engine #?

I have a frame that looks like it may be a Kawasaki replacement frame as I have just numbers on but no Z1F-.

On the Z1 Enterprises site they show a bill of sale to Winnipeg, Manitoba using the Z1E engine number only. I'd be interested to hear how other Z1 bikes are registered and Canadian bikes in particular.

I want to get going on this project but until I get the frame sorted I'm kind of stuck.

So is it Z1F or Z1E...

I am not in Canada, but 73 Z1 and 76 KZ900 both I bought in state (NC) showing Z1FxxxxxxxZ1Exxxxxx on their titles.
I bought 75 Z1 with bill of sales in NC is just like the one you are talking about. It has factory replacement frame with no number. To get it titled, I ended up getting 74 NY title. NY title shows only frame number Z1Fxxxxxx. Make me think it varies by state. Canada may be different too.
Afer all not much of help, but I've seen both.

When I bought my 1982 GPz1100 B2 model(new) in California, it was registered in both frame# and engine#. As I moved away about 7 years ago, I don't know if they still do it this way.

My '79 KZ750 did not come with a frame number engraved. Engine number was all I had, and it caused a major problem with a dipstick at DMV when I had to re register it after a wreck/salvage. In later years, frames had numbers and that's how they register them here in kalifornia.

My '76 900 was registered with Z1E number only in Wisconsin. There was one other report recently of this also. I don't have the title for my 650 yet, but I'll let you know how it's registered when I get it.

In Ontario every bike I've ever owned was registered with the frame # off the neck build tag as the VIN. No mention of engine serial numbers any time ownerships were checked, ever.

I will try to remember to take a look at the registration on the '76 900 here in alberta. I'm thinking frame # as well.

In NJ you go by the frame number which is on the tag and stamped into the frame. I just transferred ownership from my Fathers Z1B using his 1977 title which only had the frame number.
