1000J/1100/police manual cam chain tensioner for a 550?
12 Apr 2006 15:14
APE is the only manufacturer I know of, and they list:
p/n KT1000:
Z1
KZ900
KZ1000 thru '80
KZ650
KZ750
GPZ750 ('83-'85)
ZX7 50 EZ,
GPZ750 turbo
p/n KT1100:
1000J
GPZ1100
POLICE
Now, at first I thought the KT1000 might work, as it works on almsot everything else. Then I checked buykawasaki, and realized they all use a gasket, as well as look different. The KT1100, on the other hand, uses an O-ring (as the APE site says) and so does mine, so I checked thouse out. Lo and behold, the housings have the same part number! Everything else checks out the same actaully, except for the rod P/N, and the main spring.. I assume they are longer for the larger engine. However, with such a broad application on the tensioners, at least the KT1000 model anyway, I would think the KT1100 model would work, being that it is adjustable in nature anyway. Bolting up is the only concern, and that should be no problem.
Anybody have any experience?

KT1050? Which one is that? I had put in my note with the block and pistons to bill and send a KT1100.. guess I should call in about a week and let them know.. unless that was a type-o?

KT1050 fits a lot of the liquid cooled Kawasakis. ( see zxzone.com ). It is basically the same as the KT1100, except it uses a gasket instead or the o'ring.

Yea I was going to say, I searched for the part # and found it on sudco for the EX500, among others. I also realized APE makes ALOT more tensioners, heh.
I checked the EX500 microfiche, and going off what you have said, I think I might just stay with the KT1100. My stock tensioner is basically the same as the later 1000's like I said, and uses an O-ring and everything just the same. Unless gaskets are better than O-rings.. I dunno. The o-ring groove is in the tensioner body itself, and the mating surface on the block is flat, so I guess either would work as long as it bolts up.
