Sorry, Andrew... no easy fix for fixing the starter clutch. At least the parts are cheap.
OnkelB put up this thread: kzrider.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=9285
and this one:
kzrider.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=9186
Thanks, Bo... [how are those plungers doing?]

At least the 100 has starter on end of crank not off primary drive like 650.

Hi Kris - they´re doing alright, starts right up most of the time though I still get the occasional oogah squeal Most likely the starter clutch gear acting up, the surface where it contacts the rollers wears out of round and develops flat spots over time, hence the occasional miss.

Did You happen to notice what shape the woodruff-key was in,on the end of the crankshaft?
I had a similar problem, and it was the key that had snapped...starter WAS turning over, but it was only spinning the rotor on the crank...
I'm pretty sure that the "J" motor has a key,as well as a tapered fit?...

i am having the same problem every now and then my starter doesn't engage and makes a rather horrible noise,
did a search ended up with some dead links to archives,
can someone enlighten me to how the starter engages when its superposed too so i can look into the cause,
rough sketch or details would be great.
thx.
