Proper Rpm at 70 MPH? ('81 kz750H ltd) was created by jonnygorman
Had my 750 out on the road up around 55 in 5th gear. This is my first bigger bike and she sounded like I needed a 6th gear around that speed. I opened the throttle a little more and things sounded a little better at that speed. My tach wasn't hooked up then, and I am planning on going for a ride tonight now that my tach is hooked up. Any idea what rpm I should be running aroung 65 or 70? I just don't want to blow anything up.........yet.

Thanks
Jon

I would say 4300RPM, If much higher you should check you sprocket teeth count and tire sizes against stock. You could gear it up 1 tooth on the front sprocket for $20 or so. But your chain and rear sprocket must be in near new condition. Rear sprocket could go down in size a couple of teeth, if you get a new set you can change the gearing to suit your riding style/ conditions.

5,000rpm @ 60mph and about 6,000 rpm @ 70. If all is well ou get used to it and eventually feel the bike is just humming along nicely at those rpm levels

Cant remember how many teeth on either of my sprockets.

Trying to upshift from 5th to that elusive 6th is something a lot of us do on occasion :)

On a stock 750 twin, it turns 5000 RPM at 70 mph. This leads many to lower the gear ratios for cruising.

When changing sprocket ratio's, I use www.gearingcommander.com It figures in tire sizes too.

+1 for JR. I witnessed this this morning. First time I took my '80 750 on the 4 lane and she hummed along at 70 just a hair below 6k. I have a 550 that has a 6 speed tranny, so I find myself constantly going for that 6th gear!

BTW, if you still have the stock chain/sprockets (630), I parts are quite a bit more expensive than the newer, smaller chain (530) people usually switch to. I'm still running the old, heavy 630, but when it's shot I'm gonna go to the 530.

I needed rear sprocket and chain for inspection, so I just did the whole 530 conversion from Z1. I think it was like $130. I also went up a tooth in the front, but I am thinking of going back to stock ratio.

Well, put a 550 six speed trans in it and you'll have your sixth gear!

But then you'll be looking for seventh
