alternator rotor pullin'? '79 KZ1000 was created by seanbarney41
Well I know the trick of using a ball bearing and the fork cap bolt/axle for a puller but I don't have a ball bearing and it is inconvenient to pull those bolts right now. I devised a gear puller rig with a little 1/4" socket extension inserted into the bolt hole and a three armed gear puller hooked on the back of the starter clutch. Does anyone know if this will FSU?

Did this work? Holy smokes, it did! What your seein' here... you'll probably notice that all the starter gears/parts have been removed by a previous owner, that's why I'm pullin the rotor-to replace all those parts. To do this, just remove the alternator rotor retaining bolt. Mine was a regular old right hand thread. My local bike shop had sold me a puller bolt with a left hand thread so it wouldn't work and I resorted to the pictured cave man tactics. Then I inserted a 1/4" socket extension into the bolt hole. There are probably any number of objects/small bolts/rods lyin' around your garage that will work just as well, just make sure it is long enough and thin enough to bottom against the end of the crankshaft and stick out for the threaded rod of the gear puller. I hooked the three arms of the gear puller on the back of the starter clutch. Ordinarily, I think you would have to hook the arms on the starter gear. Then just tighten up the puller. I think pullers with only 2 arms are more common and would work just as well. Mine popped right apart without excessive wrenching on the puller or bangin', cursing, wrench throwing. That guy in the upper left corner can be a mean mother- when frustrated. If he shows up in your garage be sure and keep him calm with beer.
