tough to hear cam chain yes it could be. and if my memory serves me correct i think the 550 kaw had a primary chain much like the kz650 / 750 engines. these make noise and if carbs are out of sync they would rattle at idle.

is it just me, or does it sound like he may have a slight miss?

I think the slight miss your hearing was something to do with the camera, though I could be wrong.

With the primary chain on those old machines, even when in perfect sync they can rattle some at low rpms due to stretch and push/pull motion of pistons/camchain.

Be sure to tune your idle mixture screws. Dynamic vacuum sync carbs, and run the idle up a bit from stock, at say 1200rpm or so.

Should be good to go...

TeK9iNe hit the nail on the head imo.. very distinctive sound that one.. old 650 Honda's were famous for it.

Yeah, my 750 primary chain rattles too. At 1200 rpm it really quiets down.

I thought there just seemed like a miss at idle and then once he reved the bike, it seemed to smooth out a bit. Then again, if he hasn't synched them yet, that will help.

Equally performing cylinders are critical to smooth engine pulses, which is a primary objective of carb sync together with fine tuning of pilot circuit (the final step after perfection of ignition and compression components and other carb and fuel supply matters).

It's possible to achieve relatively quiet steady running at even lower than recommended idle rpm, but which could be dangerous due to inadequate oil pressure.

Good Fortune! :)
