Transmission gears....should I be able.

Should I be able to feel the notches in the shifter (like on a car) when I manually turn the knob? Cycle off of course. KZ1000P.
Right not I have 2 notches. Neutral (cause the sprocket spins) and in gear, thats it.
I dont know the mechanics of a motorcycle to know if this is correct. To me it doesnt seem right. If this is in fact broke, how do I go about fixing...what is the cause.
Thanks

bike will not shift to second gear unless output shaft is spinning.neutral and first is all you should get if bike is not moving.

Would the careful perusal of a manual be advisable before "weighing anchor"??
