How do I tell the intake from the exhaust cam?
One has r1 stamped on and the other has r6. Does it even mater?

Check to see if they are identical. If one has more lift than it is the intake. If they are the same than "it just dont matter".

The exhaust cam should have a section on it that the tach drive gear is ground in but it's smooth with no teeth.

My pleasure. I mix and match cams all the time. I always like a setup that has lest exhaust than intake. This will sacrifice a bit of your top end but will give you more lower and mid range torque. On my bike that i built I have two different cams of two different manufacturers. The intake is a .420 lift of 270* @.050 duration and the exhaust is a .410 lift with a 252* @.050 duration.

He is talking about GPz1100 cams and there was no tach drive on those bikes. The tach was taken off of the coil.

I'm pretty sure the tach drive boss is still on the cam, it's jut not cut into a worm gear. In fact, the photo looks like an exhaust cam.

The "tach drive boss" is on moth cam shafts. weather cut or uncut. On the GPz1100 it is not cot on either cam.

I would not know about the 650/750 since i do not own one of those.

Intake cams with that much duration work best with motors that have racing compression and/or big cubic inches.

I've seen an awful lot of bracket bikes go significantly quicker by swapping out long duration intakes for short duration.

Street use, street compression, no big block....less equal better all around performance...

I love the way my 1150 11:1 runs from 3000revs and up. It pulls like a monster. I have a bit of a fat lower end so i have some popping until I get to 3K when everything starts to happen. Even with the high gearing I have it wants to bring the front end up once it hits that 3K+ range. I have run a few different combinations over the years and this one by far has the most power for its size. But also this is the first engine I have built with a Bathtub head, and ported at that. This thing flows like crazy and is not over carbureted.

GPZ750 cams have no tach drive either they use electric tachs. There is a line on the exhaust cam that lines up with the flat part of the head on the exhaust cam and just dots on the exhaust & intake but no flat line on the exhaust at least thats the way my 82 GPZ750 is.

Buda has a 82 "J" series 1000/1100 motor. That is what we are covering here. The 650/750 cams are totally different and will not work. The configuration of the cams is also completely different. The cams he was asking about are GPz1100 cams. These are not even close to the GPz750 cams. The 750 cams are physically much smaller in every way.

Don't feel bad, I just know what he has. He may have been a bit more specific in his title. Such as " 83/84 GPz1100 cams" That is actually what he was asking about. He got himself a set of the hottest cams ever put on that motor from the factory and is trying to put them on an earlier motor.

FYI 1983 / 1984 GPZ 1100 cam specs:

INTAKE CAM .354 lift 238 deg

EXHAUST CAM .338 lift 239 deg
