I am getting ready to get rid of automatic tensioner and install manual type. How do i make sure that i have TDC on cyclinders so that i dont screw up valve timing.

Well lostkatt, what bike/yr are we talking about here?

basically, behind the ignition cover is a spark timing advacner that can be seen thru a hole in the ignition plate. It has a "T" mark on 2 sides of it taht indicate Top Dead Center for either cylinders. These marks can be lined up with the permanent case mark that is also seen thru the ignition plate hole.

Generally the 1 (1-4) "T" mark is lined up with the case mark, and your at Top Dead Center.
Then remove the old tensioner, and install the new one.
Make sure the new tensioner is backed all the way out before mounting to case.
Then turn in BY HAND until it stops just snug/not hard. back off the the bolt about 1/8th of a turn and tighten the lock nut fairly hard but not stripped!

GL!

Right hand side ignition plate cover...

Using a 17mm socket on most of the KZ's... Rotate clockwise the large nut until you see 1/4 on the "T" mark in reference to the engine case mark....

Now perform your cam timing adjustments...

Excellent pic.:cheer: Thanks!

The advancer is mostly hidden from view behind the large round backing plate.

Here's what the advancer looks like.
This example has the cam style rotor for points.
Dyna-S has a rotor with an embedded magnet instead of a cam.
Oem igniter style rotor has a raised pointed area.

Same advancer may be used with different rotors.

Good Fortune! :)
