Will balance the carbs again in the next couple of days and hopefully get her out on the road on Saturday.
Got some #15 pilots on the way from Jeff (Z1) so I might just drop the old 26's back on whilst I dick around a bit more with the 28's.
Thanks again everyone's help with this.

Took her out last night and she did NOT want to light up on #4. New plug inserted and #4 lit for maybe 15-20 seconds at idle then #4 died again. Plug removed, very "wet" but look like gas not oil? Tried again with another new plug and same thing happened?
At 60mph, running on 3 pots, #4 would cough every 1/4 mile or so. I think this may have been the gas/air passing through to the exhaust and ignighting there?
When idling, after #4 had died, I pulled the #4 plug cap off the plug by about 1/2" and the spark was very healthily jumping, inside the cap, from the cap to the top of the plug. This gives me the impression that a spark is available but is obviously not happening in the chamber for some reason?
Blockage in #4, Way too rich, not enough air?
Any ideas?

Both IN & EX valve seals in place and look to be in perfect shape. Both are providing the expected "drag" on the valve stems so have to assume they are sealing as they should.
Very little "wobble" (less than 1mm side to side at valve head) on either valve, with valve stems pulled out so end of stem (small end) is flush with the top of the valve. So, assume guides to be good.
Inside portion of IN valve very clean but inside portion of EX valve, lots of carbon.
I will try to post pics.

Broken oil ring on #4 AND, by the looks of it, it's been broken since it first went in. No apparent cylinder damage.
Now to put it back together.....

pretty much snapped in the middle and most definately when I was trying to get the #4 piston in the pot. Shiny for about 0.25" each side of the break and about 1.50"on the gap end of each half. No apparent cylinder damage.
I had also put the center ring on upside down! Replaced all three rings on #4 on Saturday morning.
