Fixing a broken fin on the head? was created by supercharged
Seeking help - As I was lining up parts for another project and received a used J model head in the mail. Opened the box and there it was... the last of the parts needed, only to find a piece of the corner fin broken off and in the box. Don't know if the shipper knew is was broken or if it was actually broken in shipment....

In any case, is there a decent fix for this? I have the head a the broken piece.

I would take the head and fin to the best aluminum welder you can find. The welder will probably want to grind a light "v" in the bottom half of the joint for a good weld. Weld from the bottom so it can be sanded smooth after welding. If you have a skilled welder do this you will never be able to tell it was broken off.

Jay, I'm in Camarillo. I can surely bring it to you if you have a solution... if the solution is more reasonable then searching for another head.

BTW, I was up at your shop with the Vetter bike while at WSR, but it was like meeting George Bush when i asked to see you :) Actually you were working a system and the guys up front were plenty helpful.

Any good welder will be able to tig that back on.
You won't see the join especially as luckily it's a lower fin.
I've even used lumiweld for doing this(only need a blowtorch or oxt/acet)and it gives good strong results.

Not a problem,
A GOOD motorcycle salvage yard does it all the time.
$25.00 and several minutes,
Including blasting to make it blend,
And you are on your way home.

I have seen wonders done,,,,,,,

Can you say ALL the fins ground off of one side on the Sunday morning ride.

And repaired by the next weekend.

A GREAT welder is a great welder,
Sorry to say I'm just still good.
